EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy:
Due to the riskiness of trauma and its impact on the individual both psychologically and physiologically, we find many scientists have argued that patients subjected to psychological trauma should be provided with special care from all psychological, organic and family aspects, and psychology comes to provide many therapeutic methods that can be scientifically adopted to help injured people psychologically traumatized. Due to its different impacts, which can only be removed by caring for this group of patients through effective therapeutic techniques, this is based on modern techniques that help in. EMDR gives excellent results, which is sensory stimulation using eye movements.
Psychological trauma: It is a severe psychological case that the individual is unable to adapt to, threatening his life or the lives of those around him, which can be formed through two basic methods, either by direct exposure to the individual, or by watching the traumatic situation, through which the individual feels intense fear, horror, and a sense of complete helplessness.
This method was discovered by Shapiro, 1987. This treatment is based on the assumption that there are memories, emotions, and feelings that patients with this disorder face mainly because of inappropriate sadness of the traumatic and stable traumatic situation in the patient’s memory. When doing bilateral stimulation, including eye movements, it helps to process these implicit memories and transfer them to the clear memory, making it a normal memory.
Also, this therapy helps in treating this disorder in terms of the thoughts and feelings that are associated with the stopping memory.
A therapeutic technique that depends on letting the patient recover the terrifying scenes that he saw or lived while returning the feelings and fears that he faced him because of them, and the patient follows at the same time through his eye movement, and rapidly escalating the movement of the hand of the therapist, as this technique works to alleviate the severity of psychological trauma in traumatized people.
The effectiveness of eye movement therapy is by focusing on the painful situation while moving the eye, as it helps in the secretion of sedative substances and inhibits the secretion of nerve activity, which allows the information to be treated correctly. This is what prompted us to rely on this treatment instead of previous treatments for trauma, whose results have been well-proven and superior to other previous techniques.
As it works on the treatment of psychological trauma to which the person is exposed, and this type of treatment requires great effort by the specialist and the beneficiary, as the duration of the treatment session ranges between an hour and an hour and a half, and the injured patient does not need more than 3-4 sessions to recover from the distress disorder that follows exposure. Trauma symptoms of this disorder are frightening nightmares such as obsessive intrusive thoughts, controlling memories of psychological trauma and its frightening images, irritability and agitation, social and family maladjustment and loss of control.
Adressing this therapy:
Severe psychological trauma cases resulting from disturbing situations such as being exposed to sexual abuse, torturing or neglecting in childhood, disasters, loss and separation situations.
It also includes psychological and mental disorders, including alcoholism addiction, drug addiction, depression, and healing of mental wounds. This method is highly effective for treating those who wish to improve their ability to cope with adversity.
